Annie Wilson Patterson (born October 27, 1868 – died January 16, 1934) was an amazing Irish musician. She was an organist, a music teacher, a writer, and a composer. She was known for her many musical works and books.

Annie Wilson Patterson's Life

Annie Patterson was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland. She showed musical talent from a young age. At just fifteen, she performed for the first time in Dublin.

She studied at Alexandra College and the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. Her teacher was Robert Prescott Stewart. In 1889, she achieved something amazing. She earned her doctorate in music. This made her the first Irish or British woman to ever get such a high music degree.

After finishing her studies, Annie became an examiner for the Royal University of Ireland. She also worked as an organist. She led the Dublin Choral Union and the Hampstead Harmonic Society. In 1897, she helped start the Feis Ceoil festival in Dublin. This festival celebrates Irish music and culture. Today, a special award, the Dr. Annie Patterson Medal, is given in her honor at the festival.

In 1909, Patterson became the organist at St. Anne's Church in Shandon, County Cork. She composed many pieces, including songs and orchestral works. Many of her compositions were based on Irish themes.

Annie Patterson was also a talented writer. She wrote poetry, essays, and short stories. She also published many articles and books about music. She wrote for The Girl’s Own Paper in England. She also had a series of music articles in the Weekly Irish Times. She published ten books in total. These included a book about Irish folk music and a biography of the famous composer Robert Schumann.

In 1924, she started teaching Irish music at University College Cork. She worked there until she passed away in 1934.
