History of Annunciation Church
Building the Church
In 1840, the Jesuits (a group of Catholic priests) started Mount St Mary's College nearby. From there, they helped Catholic people in the area. In the 1850s, they decided to build a church in Chesterfield. They asked Joseph Hansom to design it. He was a well-known architect who designed many churches for the Jesuits.
Jesuit Influence
You can see the Jesuits' influence inside the church. There is a special window near the Sacristy (a room where priests prepare). This window shows a priest saying Mass. A group of Jesuits are watching him. Two important Jesuit saints, St Ignatius Loyola and St Francis Xavier, are shown in the window.
Church Organ and Changes
In 1881, a new organ was put into the church. It was built by Henry Willis Senior, a famous organ maker. Later, the Jesuits handed over the church to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nottingham. In 1980, Chesterfield became part of the new Diocese of Hallam. This diocese still looks after the church today.
Around 1990-1991, the church was updated. The main altar was changed. Part of it is now used as a stand for a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Parish Community
Annunciation Church holds four Sunday Masses (church services). These are at 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 6:00 PM. There is also a 1:15 PM Mass in Polish. Weekday Masses are held at 9:00 AM at a nearby convent. This is where the Daughters of Divine Charity live. They also run St Joseph's School.
There are two schools in the area connected to the church. St Mary's Catholic Primary School is on Cross Street. It is in the old buildings of St Mary's Roman Catholic High School, Chesterfield. The high school later moved to Newbold Street.
