Anselmo Ralph's Music Journey
Early Influences and First Group
In 1991 and 1992, Anselmo lived in Madrid, Spain. He was very inspired by the Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra. When he returned to Angola in 1995, he started a hip hop group called NGB, which stands for Nova Geração Bantu (New Bantu Generation).
The group released an album called Tá-se Bem in 1996. However, they faced money problems, so the album wasn't widely available until 1999.
Trying His Luck in America
In 2000, Anselmo went back to New York to try to become a singer in the United States. He joined a Latin rock band and sang in Spanish. But he didn't have much success because of disagreements with music companies. In 2001, he also tried singing in English. Some universities liked his music, but he didn't become famous.
Success in Angola and Portugal
Feeling a bit disappointed, Anselmo returned to Angola in 2003. He started working on his first album in Portuguese, called Histórias de Amor (Love Stories). This album was made for listeners in Angola and Portugal.
When Histórias de Amor came out in 2006, it was a huge hit! It was mostly produced by Aires Francisco, also known as Aires no Beat. Anselmo's concerts attracted thousands of fans. He was nominated for awards like "Best R&B" and "Best Director" at the Channel O Music Video Awards. He also won "Best African Artist" at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006 in Copenhagen.
More Hit Albums and Awards
After his first album's success, Anselmo released As Ultimas Historias de Amor (The Last Love Stories) in February 2007. This album also did very well and included the popular song "Um Dois." He won "Best Male Voice" from Rádio Luanda in 2007. He then signed a deal with a big Angolan music company, LS Produções, to make three more albums.
On February 14, 2009, he released his third album, O Cupido (Cupid). It was a double CD and DVD. The album was recorded in Angola and South Africa. His concerts for this album were massive, with over 40,000 people attending in just two days.
In 2011, Anselmo released a special single called "A Dor do Cupido" (Cupid's Pain), which sold incredibly well in Portugal, earning a "four-time platinum" award. His fourth album, also called A Dor do Cupido, came out in March 2011. It included hit songs like "Não Me Toca," "Animal," and "Está Dificil." This album reached number 2 on the Portuguese Albums Chart. The song "Não Me Toca" also reached number 2 on the Portuguese singles chart.
Collaborations and Coaching
In 2012, Anselmo Ralph joined a music project called "Team De Sonho" (The Dream Team). He sang on 5 of the 17 songs. The group performed big concerts in Johannesburg and Maputo.
He also released a "Best of" album, which included a new song called "Sem Ti" (Without You). This album reached number 5 on the Portugal Albums Top 30 chart. In 2015, Anselmo signed with Sony Music to record three albums in Spanish.
From 2014 to 2018, Anselmo Ralph was a coach on The Voice Portugal, a popular TV show. He also coached on The Voice Kids Portugal in 2014. He returned as a coach for The Voice Generations in 2022, 2023, and 2025.
