The Anson Mills Building is a very old and important building in El Paso, Texas. You can find it at 303 North Oregon Street. This building stands on land that was once a ranch way back in 1832.
Anson Mills wanted a special building. He hired Henry C. Trost to design it. Trost was a famous architect in the area. He was known for using a strong material called reinforced concrete.
The Historic Mills Building
The Mills Building was built between 1910 and 1911. It was one of the first tall buildings, or skyscrapers, made with a concrete frame in the United States. It was also one of the biggest buildings made entirely of concrete.
A Tall and Strong Building
When it was finished, the Mills Building was 12 stories tall. It reached a height of 145 feet (44 meters). This made it the tallest building in El Paso at that time.
The company that designed it, Trost and Trost, even had their offices there. They stayed in the building until 1920. The Mills family owned the building until 1965.
Its Unique Design
The building is on a corner, right across from San Jacinto Plaza. It has a cool, curved shape on the outside. This curved design wraps around two sides of the building.
Henry C. Trost's designs, including the Mills Building, often looked like buildings from the "Chicago School." This was a style of architecture from Chicago. It meant buildings had a strong, tall look. They also had special decorations and a fancy top edge called a cornice.
Changes Over Time
Over the years, buildings sometimes get updated. In 1974, the Mills Building's windows were changed. New mirrored glass was put in. This made the building look very different from its original design.
