Ansonia is a group of small toads, often called stream toads. They are a type of true toad. You can find them in different parts of Asia, including South India, northern Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Tioman Island, Borneo, and Mindanao in the Philippines. These toads are usually small and live in forests. They lay their eggs in streams, and their tadpoles are specially adapted to live in fast-flowing water.

What are Stream Toads?

Stream toads are part of the Bufonidae family, which includes many types of toads. The name Ansonia is a genus name, which is a way scientists group similar animals together. These toads are special because they live near streams, especially those with fast-moving water.

Where Do They Live?

Ansonia toads are found in tropical areas of Asia. Their homes include:

  • South India
  • Northern Thailand
  • The Malay Peninsula
  • Tioman Island (an island off the coast of Malaysia)
  • Borneo (a large island shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei)
  • Mindanao (a large island in the Philippines)

They prefer to live in forests, often close to the streams where they breed.

How Do They Reproduce?

Ansonia toads lay their eggs in streams. Their tadpoles are very special because they are "torrent-adapted." This means they have features that help them survive in fast-flowing water, like strong suckers to hold onto rocks so they don't get washed away.
