Anstruther baronets facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A baronetcy is a special title given by the British King or Queen. It's a bit like being a knight, but it's also a bit like being a lord because the title can be passed down through families. People who hold this title are called Baronets (for men) or Baronetesses (for women).

The Anstruther family has had three different baronet titles created for them over time. Two of these titles were created under the Baronetage of Nova Scotia (an old system from Scotland) and one under the Baronetage of Great Britain (an old system from England and Scotland after they joined). Today, two of these Anstruther baronet titles are still held by family members, while one has ended.

The first Anstruther baronetcy, known as the Anstruther Baronetcy of Wrae, was created on November 28, 1694. This title was given to Robert Anstruther. He was also a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to help make laws for the country. Later, the fifth Baronet also served in Parliament. The sixth Baronet was a Lord Lieutenant of Fife, a special representative of the King or Queen in a county. In 1980, the seventh Baronet of Wrae also became the twelfth Baronet of the Anstruther title created in 1700 (which you'll read about below). Since then, these two titles have been held by the same person.

Another important Anstruther baronetcy, known as the Anstruther Baronetcy of Anstruther, was created on January 6, 1700. This title was given to John Anstruther, who was also a Member of Parliament. The second and third Baronets from this line also served in Parliament. Over time, some people holding this title added other family names, like Paterson and Carmichael, to their own. For example, the third Baronet married Anne Paterson and added her family name. The fifth Baronet added the name Carmichael. The eighth Baronet from this line also served in Parliament. Eventually, the eleventh Baronet from this line was succeeded by Sir Ralph Hugo Anstruther, who was also the seventh Baronet of Wrae (from the 1694 creation). This is how the two main Anstruther baronet titles became united.

A third Anstruther baronetcy was created on May 18, 1798, for John Anstruther. This was a separate title created under the Baronetage of Great Britain. Ten years later, he also inherited the Anstruther baronetcy from 1700. Unlike his brother, he did not add the Paterson name. When the eighth Baronet (who was also the eleventh Baronet of the 1700 creation) passed away in 1980, this 1798 baronetcy ended.

There are also other Anstruther-related baronet titles, like the Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe baronetcy created in 1929. Another family member, William John St Clair Anstruther-Gray, was made a baronet in 1956 and later became a life peer called Baron Kilmany in 1966.
