Mourão became more widely known in 2015. This was during a political period when he made statements about the state of politics. Because of these statements, he was moved from the Military Command of the South to the Secretariat of Economy and Finance.

In September 2017, Mourão spoke publicly. He mentioned that the Brazilian Army has duties to ensure institutions work. He also said that if the justice system could not fix political issues, the army might need to step in. He believed this was allowed by the Federal Constitution.

However, in May 2018, during a truck drivers' strike, Mourão spoke against military intervention. He said that if the government could not govern, it should resign or call early elections. He stressed that the country should not fall into chaos.

Becoming Vice President in 2018

On 8 May 2018, Mourão joined the Brazilian Labour Renewal Party (PRTB). He first planned to run for President. But in August 2018, he became the running mate for Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro was a far-right candidate for President.

On 28 October 2018, Jair Bolsonaro won the 2018 Brazilian general election. He received 55.2% of the votes. His opponent, Fernando Haddad, received 44.8%.

Serving as Vice President (2019–2023)

On 1 January 2019, Mourão was sworn in as the Vice President of Brazil. He was often seen as a more moderate voice within President Jair Bolsonaro’s government. This sometimes led to disagreements with Bolsonaro.

In February 2022, President Bolsonaro disagreed with Mourão. Mourão had stated that Brazil was against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Bolsonaro said that only the President should make such statements.

In March 2022, Mourão changed his political party to Republicanos. He announced his plan to run for the Senate in the 2022 Brazilian general election. He aimed to represent the state of Rio Grande do Sul. He also supported Jair Bolsonaro's reelection.

As Bolsonaro left the country on 30 December 2022, Mourão acted as president on the 31st. He made the final statement before his term ended. Mourão spoke about the 2022 Brazilian election protests. He criticized some leaders for creating a "climate of chaos" and leaving the military and people to "pay the bill."

Senator for Rio Grande do Sul (2023-Present)

In the 2022 Brazilian general election, Mourão ran for the Senate. He represented the state of Rio Grande do Sul as a member of the Republicanos party. He won the election and took office on 1 February 2023.
