Early Life and Education
Anthony Addington was born in Twyford, Berkshire, England. He was the youngest son of Henry Addington, a respected landowner. His family had lived in the area for many generations.
Anthony went to a famous school called Winchester College. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Oxford. He earned his Master's degree in 1740 and his medical degree (M.D.) in 1744.
Medical Career
After finishing his studies, Dr. Addington became a fellow of the College of Physicians. He started working as a doctor in London. However, due to his own health issues, he later moved to the countryside.
He settled in Reading, Berkshire, where he became a very successful doctor. He earned a lot of money from his medical practice. Dr. Addington was especially interested in helping people with mental health challenges.
He was one of the doctors who helped George III, the King of England, when the King first showed signs of mental illness. This was a very important role.
Dr. Addington was also a close friend and advisor to Lord Chatham, a powerful political leader. He even helped with talks to try and form a new government.
His Writings
Dr. Addington wrote a book called An Essay on the Sea Scurvy. This book was published in Reading in 1753. In it, he wrote about scurvy, a disease that sailors often got.
He described scurvy based on what others had seen. He suggested ways to treat it, like using seawater as a medicine. He also thought that adding a special acid to water could keep it fresh for long sea trips.
His Family
In 1745, Anthony Addington married Mary Hiley. Her father was the headmaster of Reading grammar school. They had several children together.
Their oldest son was Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth. Henry later became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1804. Their second son was John Hiley Addington.
