Anthony Bernard Carter (born June 16, 1975) is an American basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies. Carter played college basketball for Saddleback College and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors before joining the NBA.

Early Life and Basketball Beginnings

Anthony Carter was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He started playing basketball early, even joining the varsity team at Alonzo A. Crim High School in Atlanta as a freshman. However, he left high school after his first year.

During his teenage years, Carter played a lot of basketball in Atlanta. He played for money to help buy important things like shoes and food. People in his community saw his amazing basketball skills. They helped him get his GED (a high school equivalency diploma) and enroll in college. This was a big step for him.

College Basketball Career

Carter began his college basketball journey at Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo, California. He played there from 1994 to 1996. After that, he moved on to play for the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

At the University of Hawaii, Carter became a star player for the Rainbow Warriors. He set a record for the most assists per game in the team's history. He also became one of only ten players to score over 1,000 points in his college career.

Professional Basketball Journey

Anthony Carter was not chosen in the 1998 NBA draft. However, he still made it to the NBA. He first played one season with the CBA team, the Yakima Sun Kings. Then, he began his NBA career with the Miami Heat.

Playing for the Heat and Spurs

In 2003, Carter faced a challenge with his contract. His agent did not tell the Heat that Carter wanted to continue his contract by the deadline. This meant the Heat could let him go, which allowed them to sign another player, Lamar Odom.

Carter then signed with the San Antonio Spurs. But he only played five games with them before an injury led the Spurs to release him. He did not play during the 2003-04 NBA season.

Time with the Timberwolves and Nuggets

After playing two seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2004–2006), Carter joined the Denver Nuggets. He signed with them in April 2007 for the rest of the season. He had started that year playing for Scafati Basket in Italy.

A memorable moment for Carter with the Nuggets happened on December 20, 2007. He made a game-winning shot with less than a second left in double overtime against the Houston Rockets. This shot gave the Nuggets a 112-111 victory. In that season, he had his best year, averaging 7.8 points per game. He started almost all the games he played. Carter re-signed with the Nuggets multiple times, staying with the team until 2010.

Moving to the Knicks and Raptors

On February 22, 2011, Carter was part of a big trade. He was traded to the New York Knicks in a three-team deal that also brought superstar Carmelo Anthony to New York.

Even though he was considered a smaller part of the trade, Carter had a huge impact for the Knicks. In a playoff game against the Boston Celtics on April 24, 2011, he almost led the Knicks to an amazing comeback victory. He came into the game when the Knicks were far behind. He played strong defense against Rajon Rondo, scored 11 points, and made four assists. Even though the Knicks didn't win that game, his effort was remembered by fans.

In December 2011, Carter signed with the Toronto Raptors. He played with them until March 2012. He later tried to rejoin the Nuggets for training camp in October 2012 but did not make the final team roster.

Coaching Career

After his playing career, Anthony Carter moved into coaching.

  • In September 2013, he became an assistant coach for the Austin Spurs in the NBA Development League (now G League).
  • On July 31, 2015, he was hired as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings.
  • In September 2016, Carter became an assistant coach for the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the D-League.
  • On September 21, 2018, he joined the Miami Heat staff as a player development coach.
  • Since 2023, he has been an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Personal Life and Community Work

Anthony Carter has a son named Devin Carter. Devin also plays basketball and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the 2024 NBA draft.

When Carter was in fifth grade, his class was part of the "I Have a Dream" foundation. This foundation helps children from low-income areas get an education. In 2003, Anthony Carter became the first official spokesperson for this foundation. He also donated $100,000 to help fund scholarships at the University of Hawaii, his former college.
