Anthony Hungerford was the son of Sir Anthony Hungerford of Black Bourton. His mother was his father's second wife. He also had a half-brother named Sir Edward Hungerford.

In 1640, Anthony Hungerford was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for a town called Malmesbury. He served in both the Short Parliament and the Long Parliament.

Because he supported the King, he also attended the King's own Parliament in Oxford. This was during the first part of the English Civil War, from December 1643 to March 1644.

The Long Parliament, which was against the King, saw him as a "delinquent." This meant they thought he had done wrong by supporting the King. They ordered him to pay a large fine and he was held prisoner for a short time in 1644.

However, he was free again by October 1644. In 1646, he explained that he never actually fought for the King. He said that after a big battle called Battle of Edgehill, he went home to Black Bourton. He was then taken by the King's soldiers to Oxford, but he didn't vote against Parliament there. Soon after, he rode towards the Parliament's army and was captured.

His fine was lowered, but he still found it hard to pay. In 1648, orders were given to take control of his property. However, in December 1652, Oliver Cromwell, a very powerful leader of the Parliamentarian side, sent him a kind message.

His Family

Anthony Hungerford married a woman named Rachel. They had twelve children together! Rachel passed away in 1679 or 1680.

In 1653, Anthony Hungerford inherited Farleigh Castle from his half-brother Edward. He passed away at the castle on August 18, 1657. He was buried in Black Bourton Church on September 15, 1657.

Some of his children included:

  • Edward Hungerford (1632–1711) - He was Anthony's oldest son and inherited his father's estate.
  • Colonel Anthony Hungerford (died 1703) - He helped the King's side in secret during the war. He passed away on June 7, 1703, when he was 68 years old. He was buried in the Hungerford family chapel at Bourton Church.
  • Rachel - She married Henry Cary, 4th Viscount Falkland on April 14, 1653.
