Anthony Phelps, a well-known writer from Haiti and Canada.

Anthony Phelps (born August 25, 1928 – died March 11, 2025) was a talented writer. He was from both Haiti and Canada. His novel, La contrainte de l’inachevé, was nominated for a Governor General's Literary Award. This is a very important award for books written in French. He was nominated in 2007.

Life and Writing Journey

Anthony Phelps was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He first studied chemistry at Seton Hall University. But his passion was writing.

Starting a Writing Group

Phelps helped start a special writing group called Haiti Littéraire. He also helped create a literary magazine called Semences. He worked with other writers like Davertige and René Philoctète.

Moving to Canada

Phelps was against the government in Haiti at the time. This government was not fair to its people. Because of this, he had to leave Haiti in 1964. He moved to Montreal, Quebec, in Canada. There, he continued to write. He also worked in television and theatre.

His Many Books

Anthony Phelps wrote many different kinds of books. He wrote poetry collections, which are books of poems. Some of his poetry books include Été and Orchidée nègre. He also wrote novels, which are longer stories. Some of his novels are Moins l'infini and Mémoire en colin-maillard. He even wrote a children's story collection called Et moi, je suis une île. He also wrote a play for the stage called Le conditionnel.

Awards and Recognition

Phelps won the Casa de las Américas Prize in 1985 for his poetry book Orchidée nègre. This was a big award for his work. In 2016, he received the Prix Carbet de la Caraïbe et du Tout-Monde. This award honored all of his amazing writing over the years. Anthony Phelps passed away on March 11, 2025, at the age of 96.
