Who Was Anthony Salveyn?
Anthony Salveyn lived a long time ago, in the 1500s. He held several important jobs during his life. He was the leader, or Master, of University College. This is a bit like being the principal of a school or the head of a university department today.
Other Important Roles
Besides his role at Oxford, Anthony Salveyn also worked at Sherburn Hospital in County Durham. This "hospital" was more like a charitable home or religious institution back then. He was also a canon at Durham Cathedral. A canon is a type of priest who works closely with a cathedral.
Becoming Master of University College
Anthony Salveyn was first a Fellow at University College. A Fellow is a senior member of the college, often a teacher or researcher. In 1557, he was chosen to become the Master of the College. This was a very important position.
Why He Left His Post
He did not stay as Master for very long. He resigned in December 1558, just one year later. This was a time of big changes in England. The month before he resigned, Queen Elizabeth I became queen. She took over from her sister, Queen Mary.
Anthony Salveyn did not agree with the Reformation. This was a major change in the church in England. Because of his beliefs, he lost his job at Sherburn the next year. He was then sent to live in Kirby Moorside.
Family Connections
