Sir Anthony Ughtred (born around 1478, died October 6, 1534) was an important English soldier and leader. He served during the reigns of King Henry VII and King Henry VIII. Sir Anthony fought in Ireland, along the Scottish border, and in France. He was a brave captain in Berwick and a marshal in Tournai. Later, he became the governor of Jersey. In 1530, he married Elizabeth Seymour. She was the sister of Jane Seymour, who later became King Henry VIII's third wife.

Who Was Sir Anthony Ughtred's Family?

The Ughtred family has a long history, going back to the 1200s. One famous ancestor was Thomas Ughtred (1292–1365). He had a great military career. Thomas Ughtred was even made a Knight of the Garter. This was a very special honor.

Sir Anthony Ughtred was the third son of Sir Robert Ughtred (who lived from about 1428 to 1487). His mother was Katherine Eure. The family lived in Kexby, Yorkshire.

Sir Robert and Katherine had six children:

  • Robert Ughtred (born around 1476)
  • Sir Henry Ughtred (1477–1510)
  • Sir Anthony Ughtred (born around 1478)
  • Christopher Ughtred of Buttercrambe, Yorkshire
  • Jane Ughtred
  • Eleanor Ughtred, who married Sir Anthony Browne.

The Ughtreds were a wealthy family who owned a lot of land. When Sir Robert Ughtred died, his second son, Sir Henry, inherited the family's wealth. After Sir Henry died, his son, also named Robert, inherited the properties. Later, Sir Anthony bought some of these lands from his nephew.

Sir Anthony Ughtred began his military career in 1496. He led a group of soldiers in a campaign in Ireland. In 1512, he was knighted at Eltham. He then joined a naval trip to France. He was a captain on the ship 'Mary James'. He showed great bravery during a raid on Brest.

In 1513, he went with King Henry VIII to France. After the city of Tournai was captured, he became its marshal. He stayed there until 1515.

Captain of Berwick

From 1515 to 1532, Ughtred was the captain of Berwick. Berwick was a very important town. It was England's most northern military base. It helped protect the border between England and Scotland.

In 1522 and 1523, the Duke of Albany tried to invade England. Both times, his attacks focused on Berwick. Sir Anthony was in charge of preparing Berwick's defenses. He also gathered information and helped with talks between England and Scotland.

Being captain of Berwick was a tough job. But Sir Anthony was rewarded for his hard work. He received many royal grants. These included being steward of Lantyan and constable of Tintagel Castle in Cornwall. He also became steward of the Forest of Galtres in Yorkshire. In 1525, he was promised the job of governor of Jersey. This included control of Mont Orgueil castle.

Sir Anthony also had business interests. In 1525, he got permission to export goods like wool and lead. This showed he was also involved in trade.

Governor of Jersey

In August 1532, Sir Anthony became the captain and governor of Jersey. He took over at Mont Orgueil castle. Some people think his appointment was influenced by Anne Boleyn. This was because his wife, Elizabeth, was part of Anne Boleyn's household. Elizabeth even gave the king a special shirt as a gift in 1532.

Jersey was peaceful during his time as governor. In 1533, he wrote to Thomas Cromwell, the king's chief minister. He reported that everything was calm on the island. Sir Anthony's long experience in the military made him a good choice for this role. He served as governor until his death in 1534.

Sir Anthony Ughtred was married twice. His first wife was named Eleanor. Not much is known about her. They were married sometime before 1514.

By July 1530, he married his second wife, Elizabeth Seymour. She was the daughter of Sir John Seymour. Her family was from Wiltshire. In 1531, Sir Anthony and Elizabeth received the rights to the manors of Lepington and Kexby in Yorkshire. The Kexby manor had been in Sir Anthony's family for a long time.

Sir Anthony and Elizabeth had two children who survived:

  • Sir Henry Ughtred (born around 1533). He was born in Jersey. Henry later became a member of parliament. He was knighted in Ireland in 1593.
  • Margery Ughtred (born around 1535). She was likely born after her father died. Margery married William Hungate. They had two sons.

Death

Sir Anthony Ughtred died in Jersey on October 6, 1534. He was buried in the chapel of St George. This chapel is located inside Mont Orgueil castle.

His wife, Elizabeth, remarried in 1537. She married Gregory Cromwell. He was the son of Thomas Cromwell, King Henry VIII's chief minister. After Gregory Cromwell died, Elizabeth married again in 1554. Her third husband was John Paulet. Elizabeth died on March 19, 1568. She was buried in Basing, Hampshire.
