Antoni Łomnicki facts for kids
Antoni Marian Łomnicki (born January 17, 1881 – died July 4, 1941) was a smart Polish mathematician. He helped us understand how math can be used in real life, especially in making maps (this is called cartography). He also wrote many math books and was a very important teacher at the University of Lwów.

Who Was Antoni Łomnicki?
Antoni Łomnicki was born in a city called Lwów. His father was Marian Łomnicki. Antoni went to school at Lviv's IV Gymnasium. Later, he studied at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów from 1899 to 1903.
His Education and Early Career
Antoni had many great teachers at the university. In 1903, he passed his teaching exam. He then received a special scholarship in 1906. This allowed him to study at the University of Göttingen in Germany. There, he learned from famous mathematicians like David Hilbert and Felix Klein.
After his studies, he taught at a school in Lviv. From 1913, he started teaching at the Lviv Polytechnic School.
Antoni Łomnicki's War Service
From 1918 to 1919, Antoni Łomnicki took part in the Polish-Ukrainian war. This was a time when he served his country.
Becoming a Professor
In 1920, Antoni became a professor at the Lwów University of Technology. He taught there for the next twenty years. He was part of a group of brilliant mathematicians known as the Lwów School of Mathematics. He helped many other mathematicians, including Stefan Banach, who became very famous.
In 1938, he became a member of the Warsaw Scientific Society. This showed how respected he was in the world of science.
What Did He Study?
Antoni Łomnicki worked on many different areas of math. He studied things like probability, which helps us understand chance. He also worked on calculus, statistics, and mathematical cartography. Cartography is the science of making maps.
He wrote a very important book called Kartografia matematyczna (Mathematical Cartography) in 1927. He also wrote many books about teaching math.
His Tragic End
During Second World War, the Nazi Germans invaded Lwów. On July 3, 1941, Antoni Łomnicki was arrested. The very next day, he was shot along with many other professors. This sad event is known as the Massacre of Lwów professors.
A Tribute from Stefan Banach
In December 1944, a famous mathematician named Stefan Banach wrote about Antoni Łomnicki. Banach had been Antoni's assistant. Here is some of what he said:
- Antoni Łomnicki taught math for over twenty years.
- He helped hundreds of engineers learn their profession.
- He was an amazing educator, one of the best Stefan Banach ever knew.
- Antoni wrote many popular schoolbooks.
- He also wrote advanced math books that were even better than those from other countries.
- His work in cartography was excellent.
- Professor Łomnicki had a lot of energy and worked very hard.
