In 1854, he joined a political movement called the Vicalvarada. This movement helped bring about changes in the Spanish government. He then became part of the Liberal Union, a political party.
Later, he was promoted to brigadier. This is a high rank in the army. He fought in the Hispano-Moroccan War between Spain and Morocco. In 1861, he helped stop a rebellion in a place called Loja.
After the war in Morocco, he returned to Madrid. He had a disagreement with another important person, which led to a duel. Because of this, he was sent away to the Canary Islands. Other important generals, like Francisco Serrano, were also sent there.
The Glorious Revolution
While in exile in the Canary Islands, General Caballero and other generals planned their return. In September 1868, they came back to Spain. Their goal was to join the Glorious Revolution. This revolution aimed to remove Queen Isabel II from power.
General Caballero was one of the people who signed the Cádiz Manifesto in September 1868. This document announced the goals of the revolution. He also played a key role in the Battle of Alcolea. This was a major battle that helped the revolution succeed. He led a division of soldiers and helped them win. Because of his bravery and success, he was promoted to lieutenant general.
Serving in Cuba
After the revolution, Antonio Caballero became the director general of the Infantry. In July 1869, he was given a very important job: Captain General of Cuba. At that time, Cuba was a Spanish colony. The first independence uprising had just started there.
He traveled to Cuba with a mission. He was told to bring peace to the island. He also had to stop corruption in the government there. However, he only stayed in Cuba for about a year before returning to Spain.
