Antonio Gramusset facts for kids
Antonio Gramusset (born 1740, died 1784) was a French adventurer who lived in Chile. He was one of the people involved in a secret plan called the Conspiracy of the Tres Antonios.
Gramusset was born in Premelieu, France. He arrived in Chile around 1764. When he first got there, he tried to become a priest. After that, he joined a military group made up of people from other countries, working as a cadet. He soon left the military too. He then tried to become rich by renting land and becoming a farmer. He also liked to invent things. He even came up with a plan to bring water to Santiago, but it wasn't practical.
The Plan for Independence
In 1780, Antonio Gramusset joined two other men, Antonio Berney and José Antonio de Rojas. They had a secret plan to make Chile an independent country, free from Spanish rule. They wanted Chile to become a republic, which means a country where the people choose their leaders.
Discovery and Fate
Their secret plan was soon discovered. Someone told the authorities about it, and Gramusset, Berney, and Rojas were arrested on January 1, 1781. Because Gramusset and Berney were foreigners, they were sent away as prisoners. First, they went to Lima, and then they were sent to Spain to face trial.
The ship carrying them, called the San Pedro de Alcantara, sank during a big storm. This happened off the coast of Portugal. Gramusset managed to survive the shipwreck. However, he died three months later because of how much he had suffered from the cold and harsh weather during the storm.
