Antonio Ibáñez Freire (born September 25, 1913 – died May 9, 2003) was an important Spanish politician and military leader. He served as the Minister of the Interior for Spain from April 1979 to May 1980. This job meant he was in charge of things like national security and public order.
Life Story
Antonio Ibáñez Freire was born in Vitoria, a city in Spain. He studied at the Military Academy of Zaragoza. After finishing his studies, he became an infantry lieutenant.
He took part in the Spanish Civil War, which was a big conflict in Spain. Later, he volunteered for the Blue Division. This group joined the Second World War. During this time, he received the Iron Cross award.
After the wars, he became a civil governor. This is like a main leader for a province. He was the civil governor of province of Santander in 1960. Then he led Vizcaya in 1961 and Barcelona in 1963.
In 1978, he was given a high military rank. He became the Captain General of the Fourth Military Region. This meant he was a very senior military commander.
In April 1979, he was chosen to be the Minister of the Interior. He worked in the government led by Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez. He took over from Rodolfo Martín. Antonio Ibáñez Freire held this important position until May 1980. After him, Juan José Rosón became the new minister.
