Academic Activities
Antonio Piñero is known for his studies of early Christianity. He has translated many ancient texts. He also takes part in many public talks and has written numerous books. His work has made him a very influential Spanish scholar.
Studying the Historical Jesus
One of his main topics is the study of Jesus of Nazareth. Piñero looks at ancient texts from the 1st century in Judea. He believes there was a historical Jesus. This means a real person who lived, but he was different from the Jesus described in the gospels.
According to his research, the historical Jesus was a craftsman from Galilee. He was a religious leader, but he didn't have a huge impact during his life. After his death, his story was greatly expanded. He became the divine figure known as Christ in the gospels. Piñero suggests that many Christian ideas developed naturally within the Jewish world. Over time, people began to call these ideas dogmas (official beliefs).
Translating Ancient Texts
Since 1983, Piñero has led a big translation project. A team of experts translated all known gospels into Spanish. This included both the official gospels and others not included in the Bible. The project involved studying the social and political world of the original writings. They translated texts from Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, Coptic, and Arabic. This huge project finished in 2009. His translation work is seen as a very useful tool for study.
Paul the Apostle's Teachings
Piñero has a way of understanding the teachings of Paul the Apostle. Paul talked about how people can achieve salvation. Piñero suggests that Paul saw the Law of Moses as having two parts. One part is for everyone, like the Decalogue (Ten Commandments). This part is about how people should treat each other. The other part of the law was specifically for Jewish people. This part did not apply to non-Jews.
Sharing Knowledge
Piñero is known for sharing his knowledge widely. He has appeared on radio and TV. He also uses the internet to reach more people. In 2009, he was an advisor for the film El discípulo (The Disciple). This movie was about the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
