Friar Antonio Sancho de Benevento was known for his incredible skill in working with silver. He created many special pieces during his life.
The Famous Monstrance
His most famous artwork was a monstrance he made for the Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba in 1548. A monstrance is a special container used in churches to display sacred items.
This monstrance was truly amazing!
- It was about one meter (over three feet) tall.
- It took him seven years to complete this detailed artwork.
- The monstrance looked like a tall tower.
- It had many tiny, detailed figures and designs.
Experts believed it was one of the best monstrances ever made in Spain. Its quality was as good as those found in very important churches like the Toledo Cathedral or the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. It was a perfect example of the beautiful silver artwork from the Spanish Renaissance.
What Happened to the Monstrance?
After some changes in Spain, the monstrance was moved to the Collegiate Basilica of Gandia. It was even shown to the public at the Barcelona International Exposition in 1929. Sadly, this incredible piece of art disappeared during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
