Early Life and Role

Antonio de Raya Navarrete was born in a town called Baeza, Spain. He grew up to become a respected figure in the church. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church who oversees a specific area, like a city or region.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1594, Antonio de Raya Navarrete was chosen for a very important role. On June 6, 1594, the King of Spain picked him to become the Bishop of Cusco. This choice was then approved by Pope Clement VIII, who was the head of the Catholic Church at that time.

Later that year, on November 27, 1594, Antonio de Raya Navarrete officially became a bishop. This special ceremony is called a "consecration." He was consecrated by Pedro Castro Quiñones, who was an Archbishop from Granada, Spain. Other bishops also helped in the ceremony.
