Antonique Smith was born in East Orange, New Jersey. She went to Eastern Christian High School in North Haledon, New Jersey.
Broadway Star
Antonique became famous on Broadway. She played the main character, Mimi, in the musical Rent. She was so well-known that her picture was on taxi cabs and posters all over New York City! She later left Rent to focus on recording her own music and acting in films.
Acting on Screen
Antonique started her TV career in a show called 100 Centre Street. Later, she played the singer Faith Evans in the movie Notorious. Critics really loved her performance in that film. Some even called her "one to watch" and "terrific"!
She also acted in the action movie Abduction. In this film, she played a CIA agent. She appeared in Yelling to the Sky and the movie Across the Universe. Antonique has also been a guest star on popular TV shows. These include Law & Order and Bored to Death.
More recently, Antonique starred in the TV movie Stock Option. She also appeared in the Netflix movie Deuces. You might have seen her in the TV series Shots Fired. She was also in season 2 of Netflix's Marvel's Luke Cage. In the show Genius: Aretha, she played Barbara Franklin. Barbara was the mother of the famous singer Aretha Franklin.
Music Career
Antonique is also a talented singer. The rapper Nas mentioned her in his song "Nasty." She even appeared in the music video for that song. She was also in Rick Ross's "Amsterdam" music video.
In 2014, Antonique released her first song, "Hold Up Wait a Minute (Woo Woo)." The music video for this song was directed by actor Larenz Tate. This song was a big hit! It was even nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. This is a very important award in music.
In 2015, she released an album called Love Is Everything. Her fans helped fund this album through a website called Kickstarter. They raised over $50,000 in just 30 days! Antonique also helped write her Grammy-nominated song. She also wrote the theme song for the TV show Shots Fired.
Environmental Activism
Besides her acting and singing, Antonique cares a lot about the environment. She focuses on environmental justice. This means making sure everyone has a healthy environment, no matter where they live. She sang on the first album ever made about climate change. It was called H.O.M.E. (Heal Our Mother Earth). She has performed at many events to raise awareness about climate change. She even sang for the Pope's climate rally in Washington, D.C. People have called her the "voice of the climate movement."
