About Barbara Franklin
Barbara Siggers was born in Shelby, Mississippi. She grew up with a love for music. She used her musical talents in church, performing and playing the piano.
On June 3, 1936, Barbara Siggers married Clarence LaVaughn Franklin. Together, they had four children: Erma, Cecil, Aretha, and Carolyn. Before her marriage to C. L. Franklin, Barbara had a son named Vaughn. Rev. Franklin adopted Vaughn shortly after they were married, making him part of their family.
Barbara was known for her amazing piano skills. She was also considered one of the best gospel singers in the country. Even Mahalia Jackson, a very famous gospel singer, praised Barbara's voice. Later Life and Passing
In 1948, Barbara moved to Buffalo, New York. Her mother lived there, and C. L. Franklin had also been a pastor at Friendship Baptist Church in Buffalo earlier. In Buffalo, Barbara started a new life. She worked in a music store and gave private music lessons. She also trained to become a nurse's aide. She and C. L. Franklin never officially divorced.
Some stories said that Barbara left her children, but her daughter Aretha Franklin said this was not true. A historian named Nick Salvatore also explained that Barbara often visited her children in Detroit. Her children also traveled to Buffalo to stay with her during their summer vacations.
