Who Was Antonis Benakis?

Antonis Benakis was born in 1873 in Alexandria, which was part of the Khedivate of Egypt back then. His father, Emmanuel Benakis, was a successful businessman and politician. His mother was Virginia Choremi, who was from Chios.

Starting the Benaki Museum

Antonis Benakis moved to Athens for good in 1926. He was greatly inspired by his father, Emmanuel Benakis. He was also influenced by a close family friend, Eleftherios Venizelos, who was a very important leader in Greece.

Antonis collected many amazing art pieces and historical items. He decided to create a museum to share these treasures with everyone. He named it the Benaki Museum. He later gave this museum to the Greek government.

Even after giving the museum away, Antonis stayed very involved. He worked hard to add more items to the museum's collection. He also made sure the museum had enough money to keep running well. He continued this important work until he passed away.
