The Antwerp station is a very old building in Antwerp, a small village in Ohio. It used to be a busy train station. The Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway built it in 1880. It is mostly made of wood, with walls covered in overlapping wooden boards. The roof has a very big part that sticks out.
The Historic Antwerp Train Station
A Busy Hub in the Past
When the station was built, Antwerp was the biggest town in Paulding County. This was because of a busy logging industry. So, the station was made larger than most train stations in small towns in northwestern Ohio.
Inside, the station had different areas:
- A place for freight, which means goods being shipped.
- A waiting area for ordinary passengers.
- A room for mail and express packages.
- Offices for the railroad workers.
Each of these areas had its own room. Besides its size, the station looked like other train stations from the late 1800s in this part of Ohio. These stations were often important centers for businesses in their towns.
Moving and Preserving History
The station stopped being used in 1976. After it closed, the Antwerp Historical Society bought it from the Norfolk and Western Railway. The railroad company did not need the station anymore. They asked the society to move it. So, the station was moved about 200 feet (61 meters) from where it first stood.
Four years later, in 1980, the station was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was called the Antwerp Norfolk and Western Depot on this list. It was recognized for its special design and its importance to local history. It's unusual for a building to be listed on the National Register after it has been moved. Usually, buildings must be in their original spot to be included.
