Anuška Ferligoj is a Slovenian mathematician born on August 19, 1947, in Ljubljana, Slovenia. She is an expert in statistics, which is about collecting and understanding data. She also specializes in network analysis, which studies how people or things are connected.

Her work includes looking at many different types of data at once (called multivariate analysis). She also studies how to group similar things together (called cluster analysis). She is very interested in understanding social networks, like how friends are connected or how scientists work together. Anuška Ferligoj is now a professor emeritus at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.

Early Life and Education

Anuška Ferligoj studied at the University of Ljubljana. She earned her first degree in mathematics and physics in 1971. Later, in 1979, she received her master's degree in operational research. This field helps solve problems using math and logic.

In 1983, she completed her Ph.D. in information science from the same university. Her supervisor, Professor Branislav Ivanović, guided her research.

Career Highlights

Anuška Ferligoj started working at the Faculty of Social Sciences in 1972. She began as an assistant and moved up to become a full professor by 1994. From 2003 to 2005, she was the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. This means she was in charge of the whole faculty.

She also led the Centre for Methodology and Informatics for many years, from 1992 to 2012. She directed graduate programs in statistics, helping students learn advanced data analysis. Since 2020, she has been a professor emeritus at the university. This is an honorary title for retired professors.

Ferligoj was also a Fulbright scholar from 1990 to 1991. This allowed her to study and teach in the United States. She was a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh in 1996 and at the University of Vienna in 2009 and 2010. This award came from the Mathematical Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association. She also received the Simmel award with Vladimir Batagelj from the International Network for Social Network Analysis.

Students at the Faculty of Social Science chose her as the best professor in 2007 and 2008. She received an honorary doctorate from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest in 2010. In 2012, she was given the Golden Plaque of the University of Ljubljana.
