Anxo Manuel Quintana González, known as Anxo Quintana, is a Spanish politician. He was an important leader of the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG). This is a major political party in Galicia. From 2005 to 2009, he served as the Vice-President of the Galician Government. He was also in charge of social affairs during that time.
Anxo Quintana was born in Allariz, a town in Ourense Province, Spain. His birthday is February 25, 1959. He studied Nursing at the University of Vigo. After graduating, he worked as a nurse at the Cristal Piñor Hospital in Ourense. He received an award from the Society of General Medicine. This award recognized his work in helping people's health in rural areas.

Anxo Quintana's Political Journey
Anxo Quintana started his political journey when he was young. He worked with groups that supported farmers and workers in rural areas. He has been a member of the Galician Nationalist Bloc since it began in 1982.
Becoming Mayor of Allariz
In 1989, Anxo Quintana became well-known when he was chosen as the Mayor of Allariz. He served as mayor until 2000. During his time, he won local elections with a clear majority of votes. Allariz is a small town, but it achieved great things under his leadership.
Awards for Allariz
Allariz received the European Prize of Urbanism while Quintana was mayor. This award recognizes good planning and development in cities. The United Nations also chose Allariz as a leading community. It was recognized for its work in sustainable development. This means finding ways to grow and improve without harming the environment for the future. From 1995 to 2000, Quintana also led the Galician Federation of Provinces and Municipalities.
Moving to the Spanish Senate
In 1999, the Parliament of Galicia chose Anxo Quintana to be a senator. He represented the BNG party in the Spanish Senate. He was the only representative from his party there. Because of his new role as a senator, he had to leave his job as mayor of Allariz in 2000. In 2003, he took over the leadership of the BNG party from Xosé Manuel Beiras.
Serving as Vice-President of Galicia
After the Galician elections in 2005, the BNG party formed an agreement with the Socialists' Party of Galicia (PSdG). As a result, Anxo Quintana became the Vice-President of Galicia. He held this important position until 2009. He was also a Conselleiro, which means a Minister, for Social Affairs.
Goals as Vice-President
Anxo Quintana had several important goals during his time as Vice-President:
- He wanted to promote the Galician language and culture.
- He aimed to provide social services to all citizens. He paid special attention to women, who were often at a disadvantage.
- He worked to get the Spanish government to officially recognize Galicia as a nation.
- He wanted to change the Statute of Autonomy. This is a special law that gives Galicia its own powers.
- He aimed to get more money for Galicia from the Spanish central government. This would give Galicia more financial resources.
