Anxo Manuel Quintana González, known as Anxo Quintana, is a Spanish politician. He used to lead the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG). This is a major political party in Galicia. Galicia is a region in northwest Spain.
From 2005 to 2009, he was the Vice-President of the Galician Government. He also served as the Minister for Social Affairs.
Anxo Quintana was born in Allariz, Ourense Province, on February 25, 1959. He studied Nursing at the University of Vigo. After graduating, he worked as a nurse in Ourense. He received an award for his work in healthcare in rural areas.

Anxo Quintana's Political Journey
Anxo Quintana started his political journey when he was young. He worked with groups that supported farmers and workers in Galicia. He has been a member of the Galician Nationalist Bloc since it began in 1982.
Becoming Mayor of Allariz
In 1989, Quintana became the Mayor of Allariz. This is a small town in Galicia. He was very popular and won elections easily. He stayed mayor until 2000.
During his time as mayor, Allariz became famous. It won the European Prize of Urbanism. This award recognizes good city planning. The United Nations also chose Allariz as a top example for sustainable development. This means the town found ways to grow without harming the environment. From 1995 to 2000, Quintana also led the group for Galician towns and cities.
Moving to the Spanish Senate
In 1999, the Parliament of Galicia chose Quintana to be a senator. He represented the BNG party in the Spanish Senate. This is part of Spain's national government. He had to leave his job as mayor in 2000 because of his new role.
In 2003, he became the new leader of the BNG. He took over from a well-known politician named Xosé Manuel Beiras.
Vice-President of Galicia
After the Galician elections in 2005, the BNG formed a government with the Socialists' Party of Galicia. Anxo Quintana became the Vice-President of Galicia. He held this important position until 2009. He was also in charge of social affairs for the region.
During his time as Vice-President, Quintana worked on several key goals:
- Helping to promote the Galician language and culture.
- Making sure everyone had access to social services. He paid special attention to helping women.
- Working for the Spanish government to officially recognize Galicia as a "nation." This means recognizing its unique history and identity.
- Changing the rules for how Galicia is governed. These rules are called the Statute of Autonomy.
- Getting more money for Galicia from the Spanish central government. This would give Galicia more resources.
