Aorangia is a group, or genus, of spiders found in the South Pacific. They are a type of sheetweb spider, which means they build flat, sheet-like webs. These spiders were first described by scientists Raymond Robert Forster and C. L. Wilton in 1973.

Aorangia Spiders: An Introduction

Aorangia spiders are known for their unique web-building style. Unlike some spiders that make round, spiral webs, sheetweb spiders create flat, tangled sheets of silk. These webs often have a funnel-shaped retreat where the spider hides. When an insect lands on the sheet, the spider quickly rushes out to catch it.

Where Aorangia Spiders Live

All known Aorangia species are found only in New Zealand. This means they are endemic to New Zealand, which is a special term for animals or plants that naturally live in only one place in the world. Their home in the South Pacific makes them a unique part of New Zealand's wildlife.

Types of Aorangia Spiders

As of 2019, there are sixteen different types, or species, of Aorangia spiders. Each species has its own scientific name, often given by the scientists who first described them. All of these species were identified by Forster and Wilton in 1973.
