Al-Che-Say White Mountain Apache Scout under General Crook

An Apache scout is a special member of an Apache tribe. These scouts are very skilled at finding out what's happening around them. They use their abilities for hunting, protecting their people, or during times of war.

What is an Apache Scout?

Only certain Apache groups, like the Lipan, Chiricahua, and Mescaleros, had or still have scout societies. The main job of these traditional scouts was to keep their clan safe from enemies. They also helped find animals for hunting and new places to set up camp.

This traditional role is different from the military scouts who worked for the United States Army. Those military scouts were hired during the American Indian Wars.

How Do Apache Scouts Train?

Becoming a traditional Apache scout takes a very long time. Their training can last for more than ten years! During this intense process, scouts learn many important skills.

  • They become experts at tracking animals and people.
  • They learn how to hunt for food.
  • They master wilderness survival, knowing how to live off the land.
  • They also gain deep knowledge about their own Apache group's culture and traditions.
