What Does the Name Apulco Mean?
The name Apulco is thought to come from the word "Apoctli" in Nahuatl. Nahuatl is an ancient language spoken by some people in Mexico. In Nahuatl, "Apoctli" means smoke, water, or water vapor. This suggests the area might have had misty or watery features long ago.
A Look Back: The History of Apulco
Who Lived Here First?
The very first people to live in the area that is now Apulco were the Tecuexes. They settled here around the 10th century, which was a very long time ago! Later, another group called the Caxcan people moved into the area. They came from a valley called Teuitlan, which is now the Municipality of Villanueva, also in Zacatecas.
How Apulco Became a Town
A town called Nochistlán started to grow in the area. However, the Caxcan people were pushed out by the earlier inhabitants. With help from people from Zacatecas and the Huachichil group, the Caxcanes eventually settled back in the area.
In 1541, a religious leader named Fray Antonio de Segovia arrived. He was supported by the Viceroy, who was like a governor. Fray Antonio de Segovia helped spread Christianity and built a small church (a chapel) dedicated to Saint Peter. Saint Peter is considered the patron saint of the area. Apulco was officially recognized as a town in 1821.
