Aragon is a small community located in Catron County, New Mexico, in the United States. It sits right by the Tularosa River. As of 2020, about 76 people lived there. Aragon is about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of a place called Apache Creek.

History of Aragon

Old Fort Tularosa Site

Aragon is built on the land where an old fort once stood. This fort was called Old Fort Tularosa. It was built in 1872. Its main job was to protect the Apache Indian Agency. This agency worked with the Ojo Caliente Band of Apaches.

The fort was left empty in 1874 when the Apache tribe moved back to their Ojo Caliente reservation. But in 1880, a new fence was built on the same spot. This was done by Buffalo Soldiers. These soldiers were led by Sergeant George Jordan.

Sergeant Jordan later received the Medal of Honor. This is a very special award for bravery. He earned it for leading 25 soldiers. They fought off more than 100 Native Americans in the Battle of Fort Tularosa. Today, the only thing left from the fort is a burial ground. This is where soldiers who served in the Arizona Territory were laid to rest.

The Town's Name Changes

The town of Aragon has had a few different names over the years. From 1887 to 1898, and again from 1901 to 1906, it was known as "Joseph".

Since 1906, it has been called "Aragon". This name comes from an old Spanish family. This family still lives in the area today.

Near Aragon, there's a cave on the north side of Tularosa Canyon. People lived in this cave for a very long time. They were there from about 400 B.C. to A.D. 1100. The cave had pits and later, rooms built with stone.
