Aranda de Moncayo is a small town located in the province of Zaragoza, in the Aragon region of Spain. It is a municipality, which means it is a local government area. In 2023, about 129 people lived there. This town is special because it has a very old castle from the 12th century.

A Look at Aranda's Population

How the Population Changed Over Time

Aranda de Moncayo has seen many changes in its population over the centuries. In 1495, a census counted about 1025 people living in the town. By 1857, the population had grown to 1370 people.

For about 500 years, from the mid-1400s to the mid-1900s, Aranda usually had more than 1000 residents. The highest population was in 1910, with 1654 people.

Reasons for Population Decline

Several events caused the population of Aranda to decrease over time. These included historical expulsions, changes in land ownership, people moving away, and even a flu outbreak.

Historical Changes

In the late 1400s, all Jewish families were asked to leave Aranda. They sailed away from a port called L'Ampolla. This meant 27 families left the town.

Later, in the 1600s, Muslim families also had to leave. Even though some had become Christian, 577 people were expelled. This left 140 homes empty.

Land and Economy Changes

In the 1800s, some church properties were taken over by the state. This included a Capuchin convent in Aranda. The convent closed, and its buildings, library, and church were left to fall apart.

Also, the town lost control of its forests. These lands were important for grazing animals and getting firewood. When they became private or state-owned, the local people lost a valuable resource.

Moving Away and Other Challenges

In the early 1900s, many young people moved away. Some went to America, while others moved to bigger cities like Barcelona. A serious flu outbreak in 1918 also caused many deaths.

During the Spanish Civil War, the town experienced difficult times. Later, in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, many families moved to Barcelona and Zaragoza. They were looking for jobs in factories.

In the late 1970s, a large water reservoir called Maidevera was built. It started working in 1983. This reservoir flooded some of Aranda's farmland. This made it harder for people to farm and raise animals, which hurt the town's economy.

In the 2000s, a financial crisis and problems in the shoe-making industry affected jobs nearby. Many people from Aranda who worked in these areas had to move to another town called Ólvega to find work.

By 2023, the population of Aranda de Moncayo had fallen to 127 people. This is only about 8% of what it was in 1910. However, many people still own second homes in the town, which helps keep it lively.
