Life and Early Career
Archibald Bard Darragh was born in La Salle Township, Michigan, on December 23, 1840. As a young person, he went to local schools and a private academy in Monroe.
In 1857, he started studying at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He studied there for two years. After that, he moved to Claiborne County, Mississippi, and worked as a teacher.
Serving in the Civil War
When the Civil War began, Archibald Darragh returned to Michigan. He joined the army in 1862. He was part of the Eighteenth Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
He quickly showed leadership skills. In 1863, he became a second lieutenant in the Ninth Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1864 and then to captain in 1865.
After the War and Public Service
After the war ended, Darragh went back to Michigan. In 1867, he became the superintendent of public schools in Jackson. He also returned to the University of Michigan and graduated in 1868.
In 1870, he moved to St. Louis, Michigan, and started a career in banking. He also began his journey in public service:
- In 1872, he was elected treasurer of Gratiot County, Michigan.
- From 1882 to 1883, he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives.
- In 1893, he served as the mayor of St. Louis.
- He was also on the board that managed the State asylum.
Serving in Congress
Archibald Darragh was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives from Michigan's 11th congressional district.
He served in the 57th Congress and was re-elected three more times. This means he served in Congress from March 4, 1901, until March 3, 1909. After his time in Congress, he went back to working in banking.
Archibald Darragh passed away at the age of 86 on February 21, 1927, in St. Louis, Michigan. He is buried there in Oak Grove Cemetery.
