Early Life and Family Connections
Archibald Hay was the third son of George Hay-Drummond, 12th Earl of Kinnoull. His mother was Lady Emily Somerset. His family had strong connections to other noble families in Britain.
A Life in the Military
Archibald Hay began his military career in 1872. He joined the Royal Perthshire Militia and later the famous Black Watch regiment. With the Black Watch, he fought in the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War. This was a conflict in Egypt where British forces were involved. For his service, he received the Order of Osmanieh from the Ottoman Empire.
In Egypt, he worked as a chief of staff for a leader named Baker Pasha. He also served as a colonel in the Egyptian Gendarmerie, which was a police force. He left the army in 1886. In 1897, he became the Earl of Kinnoull after his father passed away and his older brothers had also died.
Talents and Interests
The Earl of Kinnoull was known for his musical talents. He enjoyed singing, playing instruments, and even composing music. The Times, a famous newspaper, mentioned his skills. For his second wedding, he even wrote a special hymn to be sung as his bride walked into the church.
He was also a collector of valuable items. He owned a collection of china and furniture from Dupplin Castle. These items were sold at an auction in 1911 and brought in good prices. Later that same year, his library, which held many books, was sold for over £2,700.
Family Life
Archibald Hay married Josephine Maria Hawke in 1877. They had one son named Edmund Alfred Rollo George, born in 1879. The couple separated in 1885.
In 1903, he married Florence Mary Darell. She was the granddaughter of Sir William Lionel Darell, 4th Baronet. They had a daughter, Lady Elizabeth Blanche Mary Gordon, born in the same year. They also had a second daughter later.
Sadly, his son Edmund, Viscount Dupplin, passed away in 1903 from scarlet fever. When the Earl of Kinnoull died in 1916, his grandson, George, inherited the title and became the 14th Earl.
