George Harley Hay, 14th Earl of Kinnoull (born March 30, 1902 – died March 19, 1938) was a Scottish nobleman. He held important titles like Earl of Kinnoull. From 1903 to 1916, he was known as Viscount Dupplin. He was a member of the Peerage of Scotland and the Peerage of Great Britain.
About George Harley Hay
Early Life and Education
George Harley Hay was the son of Edmund Alfred Rollo George, Viscount Dupplin, and Gladys Luz Bacon. Sadly, his father passed away in 1903 when George was very young.
He went to a famous school called Eton College. In 1916, when his grandfather, Archibald Hay, 13th Earl of Kinnoull, died, George became the 14th Earl of Kinnoull. This meant he inherited his grandfather's titles and responsibilities.
His Time in Politics
As an Earl, George Harley Hay became a member of the House of Lords. This is part of the UK Parliament, where noble people used to have a special role in making laws.
He first joined the Conservative Party. But in 1930, he decided to switch and became a member of the Labour Party.
He believed that people should not be lawmakers just because they were born into a noble family. He thought the House of Lords should change. Even with these strong opinions, he was very dedicated to his role. He rarely missed a debate and had a very high attendance record.
Work and Family Life
Before becoming a full-time politician, the Earl worked as a stockbroker and for an insurance company. At one point, he faced some financial difficulties.
He was married two times. His first marriage was in 1923 to Enid Margaret Hamlyn Hamilton-Fellowes. They had a son who was born in 1924 but sadly passed away a few months later. They divorced in 1927.
Later, he married Mary Ethel Isobel Meyrick. With Mary, he had four children:
- Lady Venetia Constance Katherine Luz (born 1929)
- Lord Hay (who died as a baby in 1931)
- Lady June Ann (1932–2002)
- William Hay (1935–2013)
George Harley Hay passed away in London in 1938, at the age of 35, after a long illness. His only living son, William, then became the 15th Earl of Kinnoull.
