Archidona is a historic town in Ecuador, founded way back in 1560! It's located north of Tena, Ecuador in the Napo Province. This town is an important spot for people who want to share their religion (missionaries). It's also a busy place where the local Kichwa communities come together to trade goods and meet friends.
Fun Festivals and Culture
Archidona is famous for its lively festivals that bring people from all over the area. Several times a year, the town hosts special Kichwa beauty and culture pageants. Young people from many Kichwa communities compete to become the "Queen of the Kichwa."
These pageants are a fantastic chance to experience Kichwa culture. You can hear the Kichwa language being spoken and sung. You can also see very old traditional dances and customs. There are several rounds of competition, and the big finale usually happens in April.
During these pageants, fun fairs often come to town. They have exciting rides and delicious food stands that stay for several weeks. There's also a big open market set up in the streets. It can make driving a bit tricky, but it's worth it! The market offers all sorts of amazing things, from beautiful handmade clothes to tasty traditional foods.
Churches in Archidona
Archidona has several churches because the Catholic faith is very important in Ecuador. The most well-known church is simply called Iglesia de Archidona. It's a very large and impressive building right in the center of town.
There is also a Baptist church located near the edge of Archidona. American missionaries managed this church for over 10 years, until 2017.
