The Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area (Spanish: Área de Conservación Arenal Tempisque (ACAT)) is a special natural area in Costa Rica. It is located in the northwest part of the country. This area is managed by a group called SINAC, which stands for the National System of Conservation Areas. Their main goal is to protect the amazing plants, animals, and natural places found here.
This conservation area is near the famous Arenal Volcano. It also covers parts of two mountain ranges: the Cordillera de Tilarán and the Cordillera de Guanacaste. Inside the Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area, you will find many different types of protected lands. These include National Parks, Wildlife refuges, and other special Protected Zones. Before it was called ACAT, this area was known as the Arenal Tilarán Conservation Area.

What is the Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area?
The Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area is like a giant natural park. It is a very important place for protecting Costa Rica's rich biodiversity. Biodiversity means all the different kinds of life, like plants, animals, and tiny living things.
SINAC works hard to make sure these natural areas stay healthy. They protect forests, rivers, and wetlands. This helps many different species of animals and plants to live safely. It also helps keep the environment balanced.
Why are these areas protected?
Protecting these areas is very important for several reasons:
- Saving Wildlife: Many animals, like monkeys, sloths, and colorful birds, live here. Protecting their homes helps them survive.
- Protecting Plants: The area has many unique trees and plants. Some of these plants are found nowhere else in the world.
- Clean Water and Air: Forests and wetlands help keep our air clean and our water pure. They act like natural filters.
- Studying Nature: Scientists can learn a lot from these untouched places. They study how ecosystems work.
- Future Generations: By protecting these areas now, we ensure that future generations can also enjoy Costa Rica's natural beauty.
