Ares (also sometimes Mars) is a powerful supervillain from DC Comics. He is based on the ancient Greek god of war. Ares is a major enemy of the superhero Wonder Woman. He often appears in her comic books and other stories.

Who is Ares?

Ares is known as the Olympian god of war. He loves to cause conflict and violence. This makes him a perfect enemy for Wonder Woman, who fights for peace. He has been a big problem for her throughout her history.

Ares's First Appearance

Ares first showed up in Wonder Woman #1. This comic was published in the summer of 1942. William Moulton Marston, who created Wonder Woman, wrote this story. In his first appearance, he was called Ares. The story also mentioned his Roman name, Mars. For about 45 years, he was mostly known as Mars.

Ares's Name Change

In 1987, the comic book team of George Pérez and Greg Potter changed things. They rebooted the Wonder Woman comic book series. As part of this, they brought back his original Greek name, Ares.

How Ares Looks

Over the years, Ares's appearance has changed a lot. Different artists have drawn him in various ways. Most of the time, he wears armor like an ancient Greek soldier or a Roman gladiator. His most famous look was designed by George Pérez. In this design, he has red eyes. He wears black and indigo battle armor. His face is usually hidden by a helmet.
