The DC Extended Universe (often called DCEU) was a collection of superhero movies and TV shows. These stories were based on characters from DC Comics, like Superman and Batman. The DCEU was created by DC Studios and released by Warner Bros. Pictures. It also included comic books, short films, books, and video games.

What is the DCEU?

The DCEU was like a big, connected world, similar to the original DC Universe in comic books. All the movies and shows shared common stories, places, and characters. This allowed heroes from different stories to meet and work together.

Filming for these movies started in 2011. Over the years, Warner Bros. released many movies in this universe. The series earned a lot of money, making it one of the highest-grossing movie series ever.

Many different writers and directors worked on the movies. They often featured large groups of actors playing many characters. Famous actors like Henry Cavill (Superman), Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), and Jason Momoa (Aquaman) played their characters in several movies.

In 2016, Geoff Johns and Jon Berg were put in charge of DC Films. Their job was to make sure all the movies connected well and told one big story. However, after the movie Justice League didn't do as well as hoped, the focus changed. Warner Bros. started to make more standalone movies instead of always connecting them.

Later, because the DCEU movies had mixed success, and Warner Bros. went through big changes, new leaders were brought in. James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios. They decided to start a brand-new movie series called the DC Universe (DCU). This new plan means most of the old actors, like Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, will not return. The DCU will begin with a fresh storyline.

DCEU Movies and Shows

The first movie in the DCEU was Man of Steel (2013), which introduced Superman. After that came:

  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
  • Suicide Squad (2016)
  • Wonder Woman (2017)
  • Aquaman (2018)
  • Shazam! (2019)
  • Birds of Prey (2020)
  • Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
  • Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
  • The Suicide Squad (2021)
  • Black Adam (2022)
  • Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
  • The Flash (2023)

The movie Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) is planned to be the very last movie in the DCEU.

Interestingly, the movie The Flash (2023) used time travel to bring older Batman movies, like Batman and Batman Returns, into the DCEU storyline for a short time. The Flash was also meant to "reboot" the DCEU into the new DCU. The first movie in the new DCU will be Superman: Legacy, coming out in 2025.

A movie about Batgirl was planned for 2022, but it was cancelled before it could be released.

Besides movies, there was also a TV show for HBO Max called Peacemaker (2022). Other shows were being planned, like another Suicide Squad spin-off and a Green Lantern Corps series.

Recurring characters

Many actors played the same characters in different DCEU movies and shows. This helped connect the stories. Some of these characters included:
