Joel Kinnaman's Early Life and Background
Joel Kinnaman was born and grew up in Stockholm, Sweden. His mother, Bitte Nordström, is a therapist from Sweden. His father, Steve Kinnaman, was born in America but moved to Sweden. He left the military during the Vietnam War. Joel Kinnaman has citizenship in both Sweden and the United States.
His father's family came from the American Midwest and has Irish and Scottish roots. Joel's grandmother on his mother's side has Ukrainian Jewish heritage.
Joel has five sisters, and one of them, Melinda Kinnaman, is also an actress. Growing up, Joel learned two languages. He spoke English with his dad and Swedish with his mom. He spent a year in Del Valle, Texas, as a high school exchange student.
Before becoming an actor, Joel traveled the world. To pay for his trips, he worked different jobs. He worked in a beer factory and swept roofs in Norway. He also managed a bar in the French Alps. He traveled for several months at a time in Southeast Asia and South America.

Joel Kinnaman's Personal Life
Joel Kinnaman grew up with a condition called pectus excavatum. This means his chest looked caved in. Before filming Altered Carbon, he had surgery to fix it. Doctors put two metal bars inside to push his chest bone outwards.
He has been a fan of his hometown football club, Hammarby IF, since he was young.
Because he travels a lot, Joel's accent is a mix of different sounds. He says it's an American accent, but the "melody" is not quite right. He has been working to make it perfect.
Joel Kinnaman was married to Swedish tattoo artist Cleo Wattenström from 2015 to 2018. He then started a relationship with Swedish-Australian model Kelly Gale in early 2019. They announced their engagement in January 2021.
