He also worked on Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

David Goyer has directed four films himself: Zig Zag (2002), Blade: Trinity (2004), The Invisible (2007), and The Unborn (2009). He also created the science fiction TV series Foundation. This show is based on the popular Foundation book series by Isaac Asimov.

Early Life and Education

David Goyer and his brother Jeff grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their mother raised them. David Goyer is Jewish on his mother's side and went to Hebrew school.

He attended Huron High School. Later, he went to the University of Southern California. He graduated from the School of Cinema-Television in 1988. At USC, he learned from screenwriter Nelson Gidding. Goyer often returned to Gidding's class to speak to students.

After graduating in 1988, Goyer sold his first movie script in 1989. It was for the film Death Warrant, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Career Highlights

David Goyer loves comic books. He has written or co-written many movie scripts based on comic book characters. These include Batman, Superman, Ghost Rider, and Blade.

Working with DC Comics

Goyer wrote a comic book series for DC Comics called JSA. It started in August 1999. For the first few issues, he worked with James Robinson. He then worked with Geoff Johns until issue 51. Johns later became the solo writer for the series.

Goyer's comic book films often explore what happens when someone becomes a symbol. This is a topic he finds very interesting. In 2011, Goyer wrote a short story called "The Incident." In this story, Superman decides he no longer wants to be a United States citizen.

Big Movie Projects

Goyer worked with Legendary Pictures on several big movies. He helped write the scripts for The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Man of Steel (2013). He also helped rewrite the script for the Godzilla movie that came out in 2014.

In June 2013, it was announced that Goyer would work on Justice League. He also worked on a sequel to Man of Steel. Goyer produced the horror film The Forest, which came out in 2016.

Independent Films and New Ideas

By 2014, Goyer was known for his superhero movies. He then started focusing on making independent films. He wanted to help create more movies that big studios weren't making. In 2015, he produced The Birth of a Nation. This film was very successful at the Sundance Film Festival.

Goyer continued to write. In 2014, he was chosen to write and produce the movie Fantastic Voyage. This film was based on the 1966 original. In January 2016, famous director Guillermo del Toro signed on to direct it.

Goyer co-wrote Warner Bros.' big movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). He worked with Zack Snyder and Chris Terrio on the script. In July 2016, it was announced that Goyer would write and direct an interactive virtual reality film about Darth Vader. Goyer said that making VR content was very different from other types of media. He found it surprising how much emotion the VR experience could create.

Recent Work

In January 2017, Goyer signed on to co-produce and co-write Green Lantern Corps. This movie is part of the DC Extended Universe. By April of the same year, he was set to write the script for a new Masters of the Universe movie. He was later announced as the director for this film in January 2018. However, Goyer later left the project.

In September 2017, Goyer was part of a team of writers for the next Terminator trilogy. This project was led by Tim Miller and James Cameron.

In the early 2020s, Goyer produced several films. These include The Night House, which premiered in 2020, and Antlers (2021). He also produced the 2021 film The Tomorrow War, starring Chris Pratt. He is signed on to produce the sequel to The Tomorrow War.

Goyer is an executive producer and showrunner for Foundation. This show started on Apple TV+ on September 24, 2021. He wrote some episodes and directed the season finale. Goyer also co-wrote the first episode and is an executive producer for The Sandman. This show was released on Netflix on August 5, 2022.
