Connie Inge-Lise Nielsen (born on July 3, 1965) is a famous actress from Denmark. You might know her best as Lucilla from the movies Gladiator (2000) and Gladiator II (2024). She also played Queen Hippolyta, the powerful queen of the Amazons, in the DC Extended Universe superhero films.

Connie Nielsen has been in many other popular movies. These include Soldier (1998), Mission to Mars (2000), One Hour Photo (2002), and Nobody (2021). On TV, she played Detective Dani Beck in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2006). She also had roles in the TV shows Boss (2011–2012) and The Following (2014).

Early Life and Beginnings

Connie Nielsen was born in Frederikshavn, Denmark. She grew up in a small village called Elling. Her dad, Bent Nielsen, was a bus driver. Her mom, Laila Inge-lise Matzigkeit, was an insurance clerk who also loved acting and writing about music. Connie was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is a Christian religion.

She started acting when she was very young, working with her mom in local shows. When she was 18, she moved to Paris, France. There, she worked as both an actress and a model. This led her to move to Italy, where she studied acting in Rome and Milan. She lived in Italy for many years before moving to the United States to continue her acting career.

Acting Career Highlights

Connie Nielsen's first movie was a French film called Par où t'es rentré ? On t'a pas vu sortir in 1984. She also appeared in Italian and French TV shows and movies early in her career.

In the mid-1990s, she moved to the United States. Her first big English-language movie was The Devil's Advocate in 1997. In this film, she acted alongside famous stars like Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves. This role helped her get more parts in movies like Permanent Midnight (1998), Rushmore (1998), and Soldier (1998).

A very important role for Connie Nielsen was playing Lucilla in Ridley Scott's epic movie Gladiator in 2000. She starred with Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. This movie was a huge success and made her very well-known around the world.

After Gladiator, she continued to star in many American films. These include Mission to Mars (2000), One Hour Photo (2002), The Hunted (2003), and Basic (2003). For her role in Basic, she even had to cut most of her hair! She also acted in the French thriller Demonlover (2002).

In 2004, Connie Nielsen made her first Danish film, a drama called Brødre. For this role, she won the Danish Best Actress Award, called the Bodil, and also Best Actress at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

In 2006, she joined the cast of the popular TV show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She played Detective Dani Beck for several episodes. She filled in for actress Mariska Hargitay while she was on maternity leave.

More recently, Connie Nielsen became famous for playing Queen Hippolyta in the DC Extended Universe superhero movies. She first appeared as Queen Hippolyta in Wonder Woman (2017). She has played this role in four films, including Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984.

Personal Life

From 2004 to 2012, Connie Nielsen was in a relationship with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. He is also from Denmark. They have one son together. Connie also has another son, Sebastian, from a previous relationship.

Connie Nielsen is very good with languages! She can speak her native Danish, plus English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, and Swedish. She also knows some Spanish.
