Jaume Collet-Serra (born March 23, 1974) is a talented film director and producer from Spain and the United States. He is known for directing exciting thriller and horror movies. Some of his popular horror films include House of Wax (2005), Orphan (2009), and The Shallows (2016).
He has also worked many times with famous actors like Liam Neeson on thrillers such as Unknown (2011) and Non-Stop (2014). More recently, he directed Dwayne Johnson in big movies like Jungle Cruise (2021) and Black Adam (2022). His 2024 film, Carry-On, became very popular on Netflix.

Early Life and Education
Jaume Collet-Serra was born in Sant Iscle de Vallalta, a town in Catalonia, Spain. When he was 18, he moved to Los Angeles, California, in the United States. There, he studied at Columbia College Hollywood. While studying, he also worked as an editor.
After finishing college in 1996, he started directing music videos. He also directed commercials for big companies. These included PlayStation, Budweiser, and Verizon.
Directing Career Highlights
Starting with Horror Films (2005–2010)
In 2005, Jaume Collet-Serra got his first chance to direct a full-length movie. Producer Joel Silver gave him this opportunity. The movie was House of Wax. It was a new version of a 1953 film. The cast included Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, and Paris Hilton. Even though some critics didn't love it, the movie made a lot of money.
Two years later, he directed Goal II: Living the Dream. This film was part of the Goal! series. It followed the story of a Mexican football player named Santiago Muñez. In the movie, Santiago goes to play for the famous team Real Madrid.
Collet-Serra worked with producer Joel Silver again for his third film. This was Orphan, a psychological horror movie from 2009. It starred Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, and Isabelle Fuhrman. The story was about a couple who adopt a mysterious nine-year-old girl after losing their own child. The film received mixed reviews but was a big success at the box office. It earned about $80 million, which was much more than its $20 million budget.
Action Thrillers and New Ventures (2011–2015)
Next, Collet-Serra directed Unknown, an action thriller released in 2011. This movie starred Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, and January Jones. It was based on a French novel.
He also directed a TV show pilot for ABC called The River. This was a horror drama that received good reviews. In 2012, he started filming another movie with Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore called Non-Stop.
During this time, Collet-Serra also started his own film company, Ombra Films. He wanted to help new Spanish filmmakers make English-language horror movies. His company aimed to be a link between Spain and the U.S. for talented directors. The first movie from Ombra Films was Mindscape. It was a psychological thriller about a man who could enter people's memories.
Recent Blockbusters (2016–Present)
In 2016, Jaume Collet-Serra directed and was an executive producer for The Shallows. This was a horror-thriller movie starring Blake Lively. He then directed The Commuter, another action-thriller with Liam Neeson, which came out in 2018.
He also directed Jungle Cruise for The Walt Disney Company. This movie starred Dwayne Johnson and was based on the popular ride at Disneyland.
In 2019, Collet-Serra signed on to direct Black Adam. This superhero movie also starred Dwayne Johnson. It was a big production involving several film studios. Filming for Black Adam began in April 2021.
In 2021, he started directing a Netflix thriller called Carry-On. The movie is about a TSA agent who is forced to let a dangerous package onto a flight. It stars Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman and was released in December 2024.
