Early Life and Education
Jason Ferus Blum was born in Los Angeles on February 20, 1969. His mother, Shirley Neilsen Blum, was an art professor. His father, Irving Blum, was an art dealer. Jason graduated from Vassar College in New York in 1991. While in college, he shared a room with Noah Baumbach, who later became a filmmaker. Jason later produced Noah Baumbach's first movie, Kicking and Screaming (1995).
Career in Film
Jason Blum started his career working for Miramax, a film production company. Later, he worked as an independent producer for Paramount Pictures. Before Miramax, he was a director at a theater company in New York called Malaparte.
In 2000, Blum started his own company, Blumhouse Productions. This company is known for making movies with very small budgets. They also give directors a lot of freedom to be creative. Bloomberg News has praised him for making "blockbusters for pennies."
One great example of this is the horror film Paranormal Activity (2007). This movie cost only $15,000 to make but earned almost $200 million! This made it one of the most profitable films ever. A podcast called Planet Money even called Blum the "business genius" behind movies like Get Out.
Blum has also produced many other popular films and their sequels. These include Insidious (2010), Sinister (2012), The Purge (2013), and Happy Death Day (2017). In 2014, he was an executive producer for the TV movie The Normal Heart, which won an Emmy Award. In 2015, he won another Emmy for the documentary series The Jinx.
Some of the films Blum produced, like BlacKkKlansman, Whiplash, and Get Out, were nominated for the top award at the Academy Awards, Best Picture.
In 2018, Blum made some comments about why his company hadn't hired many female directors for horror films. After many people criticized his comments, he apologized. He said his comments were "dumb." After this, Sophia Takal co-wrote and directed Black Christmas (2019). This was the first Blumhouse film released in theaters that was directed by a woman.
Other Activities
Business Ventures
In August 2020, Jason Blum was part of a group of important investors. They bought the fashion magazine W, which was having financial problems.
After appearing on the TV show Shark Tank, Blum made a deal with American Immersion Theater. This company creates special shows where the audience becomes part of the story.
Blum is also on the boards of several important organizations. These include the Public Theater in New York, the Sundance Institute, Vassar College, and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
Charity Work
In 2022, Jason Blum gave $10 million to Vassar College. This was the largest gift ever given to the college by a male former student.
Personal Life
Jason Blum married journalist Lauren A. E. Schuker on July 14, 2012, in Los Angeles. They live in a townhouse in Brooklyn Heights, which he bought in 2019.
