Movie Plot

Derek's Big Problem

The main character is Derek Thompson, played by Dwayne Johnson. He's a minor league hockey player. His nickname is "Tooth Fairy" because he often knocks out opponents' teeth during games. One night, Derek does something that changes his life. He takes a dollar from under the pillow of Tess, his girlfriend Carly's six-year-old daughter. Tess had lost a tooth, and the money was for the tooth fairy. Derek also tells Tess that the tooth fairy isn't real.

A Magical Summons

After that, something magical happens. Derek finds a special summons under his own pillow. He suddenly grows wings and is taken to the secret world of tooth fairies. There, he meets Tracy, who becomes his caseworker. He also meets Lily, the head of all the tooth fairies. Derek doesn't get along with them at first. Lily tells Derek that he is a "dream crusher." This means he makes children stop believing in magical things.

Serving His Sentence

Because he crushed Tess's belief, Derek is sentenced to work as a tooth fairy for two weeks. He then meets Jerry, another fairy. Jerry gives Derek special tooth fairy tools. These include "Shrinking Paste," "Invisible Spray," and "Amnesia Dust." This dust makes people forget what they just saw.

Winning Over Randy

Carly's 14-year-old son, Randy, doesn't like Derek very much. Randy dreams of becoming a heavy metal rock star. Derek starts to win Randy over when he defends him from a bully. Derek even begins to teach Randy how to play his electric guitar better. He wants Randy to win a school talent show.

Tooth Fairy Troubles

Derek visits several children as a tooth fairy. He tries his best, but he often causes more problems than he solves. Lily tells him he's the worst tooth fairy ever. She stops Jerry from giving Derek any more supplies. Lily says Derek doesn't believe in children's dreams. Later, a fairy named Ziggy offers Derek some "black market" supplies. These are not official tooth fairy items.

Caught and Extended Duty

One night, the unofficial items don't work right. A child's mother sees Derek, and he gets arrested. While he's in jail, Tracy visits him. Tracy tells Derek that Lily has extended his tooth fairy duty to three weeks. However, Tracy offers to give Derek proper supplies if he starts acting like a real tooth fairy. Carly then bails Derek out of jail.

Learning and Growing

Derek works hard to improve his tooth fairy skills. He also starts to bond more with Tracy and Randy. But during a hockey game, Derek can't score a goal. He gets angry and takes it out on Randy. He tells Randy that he will never become a rock star. Randy is heartbroken and smashes his guitar. Carly gets upset and breaks up with Derek. She tells him he needs to be more optimistic.

A Change of Heart

Later, Tracy comes to Derek's house. He reveals that he is a tooth fairy-in-training. Tracy explains that Derek's harsh words hurt him more than anyone else. At the next hockey game, Derek sees Tracy in the crowd. Tracy encourages Derek to score a goal and to go get Tess's tooth. This helps Derek remember the importance of dreams.

Saving the Day

With new energy, Derek scores the goal. He quickly puts on his tooth fairy costume and flies away. Tracy uses Amnesia Dust on the audience so they won't remember seeing Derek fly. At Carly's house, Tess sees Derek taking her tooth. But she promises to keep it a secret. Derek apologizes to Randy and encourages him to keep chasing his dreams. He even uses his magic wand to give Randy a new guitar.

Happy Endings

Downstairs, Carly sees Derek in his tooth fairy costume. She thinks he rented it for Tess's sake, and she forgives him. Derek then flies Randy to the talent show. He uses Amnesia Dust on Randy when they arrive so Randy won't remember the magical flight.

Derek returns to the fairy realm to give Lily the tooth. Lily tells him that because he did such a good job and helped Tess believe again, his fairy duties are over. Lily explains that Derek will never see the tooth fairies again. She uses Amnesia Dust on him to make him forget his time as a fairy. Derek says goodbye to Tracy. Lily sends him back to the talent show. Randy performs wonderfully and forms a band. Derek then proposes to Carly, and she says yes!

During the credits, Derek is shown playing hockey for the Los Angeles Kings. He sees Lily and Jerry in the crowd but doesn't recognize them. Jerry secretly helps him score a goal.
