Ryan Sheckler's Early Life

Ryan Sheckler grew up with two younger brothers, Shane and Kane. He first found his dad's skateboard when he was only two years old. His dad really encouraged him to skate. He told Ryan that he learned his first kickflip when he was about six years old. Ryan started skateboarding at the San Clemente skate park with his best friend, Jered Marburger. He was even there when the park first opened!

Becoming a Pro Skateboarder

First Sponsors and Turning Pro

Ryan got his first sponsors, Etnies (a skate shoe company) and Oakley, Inc., when he was about seven. Etnies invited Ryan and his brother Shane to their main office in California. There, Ryan got his first pair of Etnies shoes.

In 1999, when Ryan was eight, he was on the cover of Big Brother magazine. In 2003, two pro skateboarders, Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song, started a company called Almost. Ryan Sheckler was one of the first members of their team. He became a professional skateboarder while he was with Almost.

After the Almost: Round Three video, Ryan left Almost Skateboards. In 2007, he joined Plan B Skateboards, a company that makes skateboards and clothes. Other famous skaters like Paul Rodriguez were also on the team.

Ryan's MTV reality show, Life of Ryan, started in August 2007. His two brothers and his childhood friends, Tony, Casey, and Taylor, were also on the show.

In April 2008, Ryan did an amazing trick on Bob Burnquist's Mega Ramp. This ramp has huge gaps and a very tall quarterpipe. Ryan successfully jumped a 55-foot gap! He also appeared in Plan B's Superfuture video, which came out in 2008. This video showed his Mega Ramp skateboarding.

The Superfuture video also showed a very difficult trick Ryan did at a spot called the "Costco gap." A skateboard photographer and filmer said they were very nervous watching him. Ryan landed the trick on his fourth try. This trick even got him on the cover of The Skateboard Mag magazine.

The Life of Ryan show ended in 2009 after three seasons. In June 2012, Ryan started a new online series called "Sheckler Sessions" with Red Bull.

In May 2013, Etnies released a video celebrating Ryan's 15 years with their brand. Ryan explained that he got his first free skate shoes from Etnies and has skated in their shoes ever since.

The "Sheckler Sessions" online series finished in November 2013. The last episode was filmed in North Carolina and featured other pro skaters.

In January 2014, the Volcom clothing company announced that Ryan had rejoined their team. He had been sponsored by Volcom earlier in his career.

The first official trailer for the Plan B full-length video, titled "True," came out in July 2014. Ryan also won the Dew Tour Streetstyle event three times in a row, from 2012 to 2014. This event is a downhill skateboarding contest.
