David Gordon Green (born April 9, 1975) is an American filmmaker. He is known for directing and writing many different types of movies and TV shows. He started his career in 1997.
David Green first became well-known for his independent film George Washington in 2000. He also directed other independent dramas like All the Real Girls (2003) and Snow Angels (2007). He also made the thriller movie Undertow (2004). He wrote or helped write all these films.
Later, in 2008, Green started directing big Hollywood comedies. These included Pineapple Express (2008), Your Highness, and The Sitter (both from 2011). He then went back to making independent dramas for a short time. These films were Prince Avalanche (2013), Joe (2013), and Manglehorn (2014).
After that, he returned to directing bigger studio movies. These included Our Brand Is Crisis (2015) and Stronger (2017). David Green also directed a series of three horror films for the Halloween movie series. These were Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021), and Halloween Ends (2022). He co-wrote these films with his friend and frequent helper, Danny McBride.
More recently, Green directed The Exorcist: Believer (2023). He also directed the Christmas comedy Nutcrackers, which came out in 2024. Besides movies, David Green has directed episodes for several comedy TV shows. These include Eastbound & Down (2009–2013), Red Oaks (2014–17), Vice Principals (2016–17), and The Righteous Gemstones (2019–2025). For all these shows, he also helped manage the production as an executive producer.

Early Life and Education
David Gordon Green was born on April 9, 1975, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He grew up in Richardson, Texas, and is one of four children. His mother, Jean Ann, was a Lamaze instructor. His father, Hubert Gordon Green, Jr., was a medical school dean.
Green went to Richardson High School. He then studied at the University of Texas at Austin. Later, he went to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. There, he focused on learning how to direct films. Today, he lives in Charleston, South Carolina.
David Green's Filmmaking Journey
While he was still a college student, David Green made two short films. These were called Pleasant Grove and Physical Pinball. He made them at the North Carolina School of the Arts.
His first full-length movie was George Washington in 2000. This film was praised by critics, and Green wrote and directed it. After that, he directed All the Real Girls in 2003 and Undertow in 2004. In 2007, he directed Snow Angels. This was his first movie based on a book, a novel by Stewart O'Nan. The film was shown for the first time at the Sundance Film Festival. It starred famous actors like Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale.
In 2008, David Green's career changed direction. He directed the comedy movie Pineapple Express, which starred Seth Rogen. He also directed twelve episodes of the HBO TV series Eastbound & Down. He also worked as a consulting producer for the show. In 2011, he helped create the animated TV series Good Vibes. He also directed the comedies Your Highness and The Sitter that year.
In 2013, Green briefly went back to making independent films. He directed and co-wrote Prince Avalanche and Joe. He then made Manglehorn (2014), Our Brand Is Crisis (2015), and Stronger (2017).
In 2018, Green directed the horror movie Halloween. This film was a sequel to the original Halloween movie. It was produced by Jason Blum and had John Carpenter as an executive producer. Green co-wrote the script with Danny McBride. He also directed the next two movies in the series: Halloween Kills (released in October 2021) and Halloween Ends (released in October 2022).
In December 2020, it was announced that Green would direct a new movie in The Exorcist series. This movie, The Exorcist: Believer, was a direct follow-up to the 1973 film. It was released in October 2023.
Green also directed the Christmas comedy Nutcrackers. This movie was first shown at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Green said about the film that it's "a comedy, it's a drama, it's a horror movie." He also mentioned it was a reason for him to "start moving" and "get out to the farm."
