Aretxabaleta is a town located in the Gipuzkoa province, which is part of the Basque Country in northern Spain.
This town is situated along the Bergara road. It is very close to a larger city called Arrasate to its north. To the south, you'll find the smaller town of Eskoriatza.
Understanding the Town's Name
The name "Aretxabaleta" comes from the Basque language. For a long time, people often used the Spanish spelling, Arechavaleta, even in English.
However, the local government, also known as the town council, decided to make the Basque spelling "Aretxabaleta" the official name. This change happened on June 4, 1979. The Spanish central government then approved this decision on March 3, 1981. This means the town's official name now truly reflects its Basque heritage.
