Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Argimund was a Visigothic leader who tried to become king. He briefly claimed the throne around 589–590. However, the rightful king, Reccared I, stopped him.

Why Did Argimund Rebel?

After King Reccared I changed his religion from Arianism to Catholicism, some people were unhappy. This change caused a lot of tension in the Visigothic Kingdom. Many leaders and bishops who followed Arianism did not agree with the king's decision.

  • One group, led by Sunna, an Arian bishop from Mérida, tried to put another Arian leader named Segga on the throne.
  • This plot failed because someone named Witteric revealed their plans.

Even after this first attempt, more rebellions happened. Argimund's revolt was one of these. He started his uprising in 589 somewhere in the Visigothic Kingdom.

How Was the Rebellion Stopped?

King Reccared I acted quickly to stop Argimund's rebellion. Just as he had done with the earlier revolt by Segga, King Reccared sent his trusted general, Claudius, to deal with the situation.

The rebellion likely did not last very long, perhaps only a few months or even weeks. Argimund was captured by King Reccared's forces. After his capture, Argimund was banished from the kingdom. What happened to him after his exile is not known.
