Segga facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Segga was a person who tried to become king of the Visigoths in the year 587. He wanted to take the throne from the real king, Reccared I, but he only managed to claim it for a short time.

After King Reccared changed his religion from Arianism to Catholicism, some people were not happy. A group of them, led by Sunna, who was an Arian bishop from Mérida, planned to make Segga the new king. They also wanted to harm the Catholic bishop of Mérida, Masona, and the leader of the Lusitania region, Claudius.

Segga's Rebellion and Capture

King Reccared found out about the plan. He sent Claudius to stop the rebellion. One of the people involved in the plot, named Witteric, told Claudius about it. Because of this, Segga was caught.

According to a writer named John of Biclarum, Segga faced a severe punishment for trying to take the throne. His hands were cut off, and he was sent away to live in Galicia.

Who Supported Segga?

Segga's rebellion had the support of several important Visigothic counts. These counts were likely Arians, but they might not have joined the rebellion only because of their religious beliefs.

The people who were less important in the plot lost their property and their jobs, and they were sent away from the kingdom. However, one of the main rebels, named Vagrila, found safety in a church called the basilica of Saint Eulalia.

Claudius was asked to hand over Vagrila, his family, and his belongings to the church in Mérida, and he did. But Bishop Masona, who was the Catholic bishop, then released Vagrila and his family and gave his property back to him.
