Argos is a small town located in Marshall County, Indiana, in the United States. It's part of both Green and Walnut townships. In 2020, about 1,777 people lived there.

History of Argos

In 1833, a man named Sidney Williams came to the area that is now Marshall County. He bought a large piece of land, about 600 acres, where Argos stands today. Mr. Williams built a tavern and an inn, which were like hotels for travelers. He also helped build a part of the Michigan Road, an important route at the time.

Later, Mr. Williams sold his land to Clark Bliven. Bliven built the courthouse on this land. For a while, this place was just a rest stop. It wasn't officially a town yet.

How Argos Became a Town

On January 8, 1851, two men, John Pleak and Marquis L. Smith, planned out a new town. They named it Sidney to honor Sidney Williams.

A few years later, on November 6, 1856, another town called Fremont was planned by Joseph H. Rhodes. Fremont was named after Colonel John C. Fremont. He was a famous explorer and politician who ran for president on the same day the town was founded.

Naming Walnut Township

On May 21, 1859, people in the area held a meeting at the schoolhouse. They wanted to form a new township (a small local government area) and choose a name for it. They also needed to pick someone to be the trustee, who would manage the township.

The names suggested were Argos, Noble, and Richland. Noble was removed from the list. When they voted, Argos received 12 votes, and Richland received 8 votes. Because of this, the local leaders decided the township should be called Walnut Township. This name was chosen because there were many walnut trees in the area. John A. Rhodes was chosen as the first trustee.

The Name Argos

In 1854, the post office in Sidney was moved. The congressman for the area, Schuyler Colfax, was asked to name the new post office. He was very interested in ancient Greek history. So, he decided to name the post office Argos, after a famous ancient Greek city mentioned in the epic poem The Iliad.

When the towns of Sidney and Fremont joined together in 1859, they kept the name Argos. The town of Argos officially became a town under state law in December 1869.

In 2001, the Argos Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means the buildings in that area are important for their history and should be protected.
